{"id":125,"date":"2002-12-05T01:01:11-05:00","date_gmt":"2002-12-05T09:01:11+00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/peterjanes.ca\/wordpress\/?p=125"},"modified":"2005-11-01T14:19:59-05:00","modified_gmt":"2005-11-01T19:19:59+00:00","slug":"llanfair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peterjanes.ca\/blog\/2002\/12\/05\/llanfair\/","title":{"rendered":"Llanfair"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class='e-content'><p>I discovered while <span title=\"Don't even start.\">browsing my dictionary<\/span> many years ago that the full name of the Welsh village of Llanfair&#8212;&#8203;Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, and yes, there are 4 <cite>l<\/cite>s in a row there&#8212;is 58 letters long and is reputed to be the longest place name in Great Britain.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.everything2.com\/index.pl?node=googling\">Googling<\/a> past the domain squatters, I found an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ricksteves.com\/plan\/destinations\/britain\/llanfair.htm\">interesting article about the town<\/a>, including a guide to Welsh pronunciation.  If you want to hear it pronounced, an Australian group called Cotters Bequest uses it in the lyrics to an <a href=\"http:\/\/stage.vitaminic.co.uk\/gavin_o_loghlen_and_cotters_bequest\/\">eponymous song<\/a>, although I can&#8217;t follow it even with the pronunciation guide.  <ins datetime=\"2005-03-22T21:52:00-05:00\">And here&#8217;s <a href=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/2005\/03\/22\/llanfair.ogg\">a clip of the name<\/a> as interpreted by the lovely <a href=\"http:\/\/us.imdb.com\/name\/nm0915208\/\">Naomi Watts<\/a> on <a href=\"http:\/\/us.imdb.com\/title\/tt0169455\/\"><cite class=\"title\">Inside the Actors Studio<\/cite><\/a>.<\/ins><\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Amazingly, this came up in random conversation with kc, my writer friend (who I&#8217;m hoping I&#8217;ll be able to link to in the near- to middle-future).<\/p><\/div><div class=\"syndication-links\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"I discovered while browsing my dictionary many years ago that the full name of the Welsh village of Llanfair&#8212;&#8203;Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, and yes, there are 4 ls in a row there&#8212;is 58 letters long and is reputed to be the longest place name in Great Britain.
