So I was tooling down one of the relatively uncrowded city highways at 55mph (that&#8217;s 88km\/h for anyone outside the U.S., or 147840 furlongs\/fortnight) in my parents&#8217; minivan when the taillights of the car in front of me came on and it jerked and started spewing smoke.  It was only after I swerved, braked, and whatever else I wound up doing that we realized what happened: the guy <em>shifted into reverse<\/em> in the middle of the road!<\/p>\n\n<p>Like Scott, I shudder to think what might have happened.  If we&#8217;d been in heavier traffic or I&#8217;d been driving a little closer than I should have been things would have turned out differently.<\/p>\n\n<p>It&#8217;s an experience I&#8217;m not eager to repeat.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"syndication-links\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Scott Andrew LePera has a short anecdote about insane drivers that recalled an experience I had last summer.
