Flash <em>websites<\/em> suck.  Flash <em>ads<\/em> suck.  Flash used for the sake of using Flash sucks.<\/p>\n\n<p>Even website designers recognize this: when&#8217;s the last time you saw one of those bloated Flash <q>introductions<\/q> without a <cite>skip<\/cite> button prominently displayed right next to it?  (Extra points off for irony: the <cite>put-the-skip-button-<strong>inside<\/strong>-the-Flash-intro<\/cite> pattern.)<\/p>\n\n<p>(A lot of the above goes for Java applets used in similar situations, but at least it&#8217;s useful on the server side too.)<\/p>\n\n<p>When doesn&#8217;t Flash suck?  It&#8217;s probably indicative of how bad things are that only one site comes to mind: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homestarrunner.com\/\">Homestar Runner<\/a>, home of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homestarrunner.com\/sbemail.html\">Strong Bad&#8217;s e-mail<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>This rant brought to you by a guy who&#8217;s seen one too many pointless Flash sites today.  And the letter <cite>Z<\/cite>&#8230; that&#8217;s <cite>zed<\/cite>, not <cite>zee<\/cite>, and is a topic for another day.<\/p>\n\n<p><ins datetime=\"2003-08-03T23:35:00-05:00\">Serendipity: Tim Bray&#8217;s <a title=\"Unflash\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tbray.org\/ongoing\/When\/200x\/2003\/08\/03\/Unflash\">post on a similar topic<\/a>, published at 10:42pm local time but which I didn&#8217;t see in my aggregator until just now.  Although he does use the phrase <q>Flash sucks<\/q>, the gist of the article is this: given the choice of a Flash UI or an HTML one, users <q>&#8230;ended up going for the HTML version every time.<\/q><\/ins><\/p><\/div><div class=\"syndication-links\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Flash sucks.
