By the early &#8217;70s, albums were being stuffed with up to a dozen hit tracks and sometimes ran close to 40 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Flash forward to today, when CDs max out north of 70 minutes&#8230; <q>The days of releasing an album with 17 or 18 cuts are over<\/q>&#8230;.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"source\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mtv.com\/news\/articles\/1477001\/20030819\/index.jhtml?headlines=true\">MTV.com<\/a>, via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theshiftedlibrarian.com\/2003\/08\/20.html#a4472\">The Shifted Librarian<\/a><\/p>\n\n<p>Um, <em>excuse me<\/em>?  The only CD I&#8217;ve bought in recent memory that comes close to 70 minutes <em>or<\/em> 18 tracks is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moteldarlene.com\/\">Darlene<\/a>&#8216;s, and I considered it unique enough to <a href=\"http:\/\/peterjanes.ca\/blog\/archives\/2003\/07\/23\/janes-addiction\">blog about<\/a>.  The 12-track CD is most common in my collection by far, and few are longer than 48 to 50 minutes; I often compile the contents of three discs to two <abbr title=\"Compact Disc-ReWritable\">CD-RW<\/abbr>s to take with me in the car.<\/p>\n\n<p>Which isn&#8217;t to say I prefer quantity to quality or musical preference: just the opposite, in fact.  Given the choice between a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B00006CXXU\/ref=nosim\">70-minute 20-track Christina Aguilera disc<\/a> and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B000007413\/ref=nosim\">12-track release<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sotw.ca\/\">Spirit of the West<\/a>, I&#8217;ll pick the latter every time.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"syndication-links\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"More than half a century ago the debut of vinyl LPs was a revelation for music fans.
