Coming in at number twelve was the <a href=\"http:\/\/java.sun.com\/docs\/books\/jls\/\">Java programming language<\/a>, invented by Alberta&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/today.java.net\/jag\/\">James Gosling<\/a>.  So what did all of the on-screen graphics show?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-xml\/\">XML<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Most of it was fairly generic XML, although there was a sample that was at least Java-related: an <a href=\"http:\/\/ant.apache.org\/\">Ant<\/a> buildfile.  And I guess it looks <cite class=\"term\">computer-y<\/cite> to have dense blocks of characters with lots of &lt;s and &gt;s thrown in.  But really, <em>come on<\/em>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>That said, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tbray.org\/\">Tim Bray<\/a>, co-editor of and a major contributor to the XML specification, is also <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tim_Bray\">Canadian<\/a>, so at least that part was right.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"syndication-links\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"I&#8217;m not one to complain&#8212;much&#8212;but I did have to laugh at part of CBC&#8217;s The Greatest Canadian Invention tonight.
