Paul Gorbould posted some additions to TV Land’s The 100 Greatest TV Quotes & Catch Phrases. Some of the entries on the original list are debatable, others are just silly; Paul’s additions are mostly good, although I’d claim that What’s up, doc?
isn’t technically a TV catch phrase, since Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes were around well before TV appeared.
Anyway, knowing how Matt loves the PopCultRefs and mental exercises, I thought I’d make a bit of a quiz out of them.
Hey hey hey!
What comedian provided the voice for Fat Albert?Hi, I’m Larry, this is my brother Darryl, and this is my other brother Darryl.
In what state was Newhart set?Norm!
What was Norm Peterson’s wife’s name?We are two wild and crazy guys!
From what country did brothers George and Yortuk Festrunk hail?Survey says…
Hogaaaaaan!
What’s the common factor between those two quotes?I love it when a plan comes together.
What inside PopCultRef appeared in the opening credits of The A-Team?De plane! De plane!
In what James Bond movie did Hervé Villechaize play the villain’s henchman?D’oh!
How is Homer’s ubiquitous word written in Simpsons scripts and episode titles?Aaay!
What phrase is used to describe the point where a once-loved television show goes terribly, horribly wrong for good?Sock it to me!
What U.S. presidential candidate phrased Laugh-In‘s running gag line in the form of a question?
That’s it. Enjoy!
Okay, okay, a bonus question since you’ve been good: name the star of the movie that this post’s title comes from.
Ooooh, a quiz! Nice work, Peter. I knew the answers to 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9 right away, but the others required some Googling. Glad you liked my additions to the catch phrase list (and fair point about Bugs.)
A quiz where I might actually be able to answer some! Woo hoo! Here goes:
1. I always figured it was Bill Cosby.. .wasn’it it?
2. Vermont
3. The never-seen, but oft-mentioned Vera
4. Czechoslavakia, I think
5. Family Feud host, and Hogan’s Heroes regular, Richard Dawson, if I don’t miss my guess
6. Sorry, never watched A-Team. I know, I know.. you pity the fool!
7. Ooh, that’s a good one. I can’t even picture which Bond it was. I’ll guess The Man With The Golden Gun (and Moore, obviously)
8. D’oh! I don’t know what you’re asking!
9. That would be Fonzie jumping the shark on Happy Days, indeed. I fear the day when my blog is determined to have jumped the shark…
10. Wow! The only prez type I associate with that show is Tricky Dick.
Excellent, excellent quiz… certainly got my brain cells humming!
Hmm, I thought number six was a gimme… and just realized now (honestly!) that its position in the list could be considered a big hint too.
Full answers later….
Fun quiz! I was guessing #2 as New Hampshire but I expect Matt is right. I’m with Matt up to #7 (including no clue on the A team one). # 9 was too easy as it is a household saying around here. Loved #10….maybe Clinton?
Costner certainly isn’t my favorite actor, but there’s something that gets me every time I watch Field of Dreams. That line, “Hey Dad, you wanna have a catch?” has always stuck with me – and I’m really not sure why…
Huh, now I’m really curious about #6 – and I thought I knew the A-Team! It’s position isn’t helping, even though I found the opening sequence online:

Can’t wait to find out.
Oh, and I was going to say that my fave line from Hannibal on the A-Team isn’t his catchphrase, good as it is. The one I most enjoyed was, “It’s always darkest just before it goes completely black.”
OK, most of the answers are up and correct already, so I’ll just list the ones that there were multiple or no answers to.
For number two, Dick and Joanna Loudon bought the Stratford Inn in… Vermont!
The inside joke in number six, which you can see in the video Paul linked to, is that a Cylon warrior—complete with sound effects—walks by Dirk “Faceman”/”Starbuck” Benedict on a movie set. (The happenstance hint is that “Number Six” is the main humanoid Cylon—Baltar’s companion—in the new-and-improved Battlestar Galactica series.)
Number eight may be more familiar to PVR owners: it’s “(annoyed grunt)”, which makes clever episode titles like “Supercalifragilisticexpiali(annoyed grunt)cious” and this season’s “G.I. (annoyed grunt)” look awfully strange.
Number ten is Nixon. It’s got to be one of the strangest line readings ever.
Nice work folks! Smarter than the average bear, indeed. 🙂
Ah ha! Now I understand… I got the Cylon bit, but since I haven’t watched the new Galactica series (yet – a friend gave me the DVDs) I didn’t catch the Number Six bit.
Very good quiz, Peter – you should do more of these!
