I see it there. Right there, in the AwesomeBar. It’s taunting me.

How, in 2008—2008-08-22, to be precise—in an environment that’s full of geeks and geek-turned-managers, is it possible that anyone even ponders the possibility of coming up with Status20082208
?
Le sigh.
Um – for someone who is only a geek wanna bee, why is this taunting? what is the significance?
The YYYYDDMM format is unnatural, and nonsensical for a number of reasons, but rather than go into all that I’ll direct you to a brief discussion of why ISO-8601 date formats are preferred.
Ah, the elusive 22nd month.
It’s funny that you would post this. I just finished having a… uh… *discussion* with some of our California-based developers who argued that appending a filename with ‘-20080806’ would be confusing as "no-one would be able to figure out what date that was". I countered with: "Since it’s an ISO-8601 standard date format, *most* of the world would clearly understand it and that perhaps the confusion would be contained to the more central portions of North America". See!? Sometimes ISO standards are a *good* thing!
